VideoPress For Wordpress [Video & Plug-in]

by Greg Nemer

While watching the Timothy Ferris video on How to Get Traffic To Your Blog I noticed something.

He was using VideoPress in his blog.

I loved the look and layout of videopress and decided to investigate. According to the webpage,VideoPress makes it easy to upload, embed, and share video on your WordPress.com blog or any site around the world, even in full HD.

What is VideoPress?

This video should give you a good introduction to Videopress. This video is mostly for wordpress.com

How To Get VideoPress

  1. Get a blog on WordPress.com.
  2. Go to your upgrades page.
  3. For self-hosted WordPress sites grab the plugin

But what if you have a self hosted blog?

Ok, I grabbed the Videopress plugin and installed it on this blog,

I was all set to do  my own video but after I installed the plugin I got…

Nothing.

Well almost nothing…

If you ever wonder how people like me go about learning how to use all the tools available online then this post should help.

Look at the screenshots below to see how I researched this tool.

First a  little icon was added  next to my other media icons:

Littlle Media Icon For VideoPress

Littlle Media Icon For VideoPress

When I clicked on the little media icon this is the image that I got:

clicking on the videopress icon

clicking on the videopress icon

Ok. I don’t use wordpress.com but I do know that premium features are available for wordpress.com

I’m also aware that the upgrade to videopress costs $59.97 a year.

Seems that Videopress is great for Wordpress.com. But how is Timothy Ferris using it on his self hosted blog? See my previous post to watch his video on How to Get Traffic To Your Blog.

So I went through some of the motions:

I checked out the plugin page FYI

FYI

Still no help.
I checked out the Author, Joeseph Scott

Not even a related post. Update: The same day that I posted this article Joseph added a very good explanation of his plugin. See the comments below.

I Googled videopress for wordpress.org

Although I found very little I did find this neat video of a dog trying to get his bone off of the table (That’s a rabbit trail, or should I say dog bone diversion):

I am Matt Thomas » VideoPress for WordPress.org

I checked Matt,  the founder of Wordpress http://ma.tt/about/

Nothing, Can you help me, Matt?

Wordpress.com

I finally discovered how do it !  However It was a real pain since there is not very much information available.

Here’s the steps:

  1. Set up a quick Wordpress.com account and blog
  2. Buy the upgrade for Videopress ($59.97 for a year)
  3. Upload your video to the wordpress.com server. In other words post the video to Wordpress.com first.
  4. Then use the embed link on the video to post it on your blog (like I just did with the video above).

In my previous post entitled Timothy Ferris on Building a High Traffic Blog I went to Tim’s blog and checked where his embed code on the video pointed to. It pointed to Wordpress first: – http://v.wordpress.com/cbG17WXi. Tim’s video is hosted at Wordpress.com.

I’m not using videopress right now so I have no need for the plugin. As I said, I really like the looks and layout of the program and may end up using it later on.

I hope this article is a help to you. Let me know what you think. I appreciate your comments in the form below.

Sometimes it’s all about the timing. I just posted text to the plugin page to describe in more detail what this plugin is intended to do.

Instead of getting the dashboard it should have provided a message indicating that you didn’t have any blogs associated with your account that had the VideoPress upgrade. I’ll take a look at that.

Thanks so much Joseph!
You’re right about the timing. I just barely missed your update. I just read it and it is VERY informative. I hope a lot of people take advantage of your plugin. I’ve placed an update in the article.

Also, I want to apologize to you if my post in any way came across as negative. I would never publicly bash anybody on this blog. That’s not proper blog etiquette.

I appreciate all the hard work you put into it.

Thanks again!
