When starting an internet business you’ll need the best tools available to have an effective online presence. I use and recommend the following Free and Discount Software and tools because I know that they are some of the best and easiest to use to start an internet business.

Web Hosting

WordPress

Once you have your domain name and web hosting ready it’s time to install a blog. I’ve found that this is the easiest way to get your own website. I Recommended using WordPress. If you visit WordPress.org you can see that the software is free. I prefer installing it from using the c-panel functions from within your hosting. The other option is to use the WordPress hosted service at WordPress.com.  You lose some of the flexibility of WordPress.org but it’s a good alternative if you are just starting out our if you don’t want to spend any money (some optional services are available for a fee)

Google’s Free Solution for a blog is Blogger.com. It’s very easy to use. The downside – it’s not on your server, so you don’t get the benefit of links or search engine listings.

WordPress Themes

Once you have Your WordPress Blogging platform installed it’s time to install a WordPress Theme. There are plenty of free WordPress themes available. I like the Copyblogger and Cutline free WordPress themes.

The same author, Chris Pearson, also has a premium WordPress Theme called The Thesis Theme – I use the Thesis Theme on this website.  It is the VERY Best and most complete WordPress Theme available on the Internet Today. I Highly Recommend it.

I also like the Headway Theme, The Genesis Theme By StudioPress and the Socrates Theme.

FTP Clients

You’ll Need an FTP Client For Uploading Files To Your Server (like BlueHost)

I use a Free software called Filezilla most of the time. You may also consider Fireftp which is a great plugin for Firefox.

Mac Users may enjoy Transmit 3 FTP client for Mac which includes column view, search., zooming tabs and many more features.

Editing Your Website

You may find it necessary to edit your new blogs design or build an HTML Website.

If you don’t use a WordPress Blog, you can try out Microsoft Expression which I’ve used since it seems easier than Macromedia’s Dreamweaver or Blinkweb.This service is great for web marketing . Everything’s all laid out and ready for you to customize. The tutorials are great for beginners. It’s free but extended options are fee based.

Another option is using the free trial for Artisteer which is an automated  web design software for blogs, CMS and portals.

When it comes to HTML Editors, Kompozer is a more up-to-date version of the open source web design software Nvu. It’s allows you to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding.  I’m using it on my ubuntu/linux computer. It’s free.

I also like the free text and html editor called Note Tab Light which allows you to replace your notepad.

Don’t forget Windows Live Writer which is the best free desktop blogging client to date for windows users. You can do a lot with images using it.

Text and Word Processing

OpenOffice – Free Office Suite This is similar to Microsoft Office, and it’s 100% free. It contains a word processor, database program, spreadsheet, presentation program, and drawing software.

Note Tab Light – Replaces Notepad. Free but paid versions offer more options.

Fontcapture- Create a font from your own handwriting. All you need is a printer and a scanner.Simply fill in the font template, scan and upload it to our website, and download your completed font. It’s free and there’s no software or optin required.

Video Tools

Flip Ultra HD Video Camera- Why pay for a bulky, expensive, video recorder? This video HD camera works really well and It costs less than $170. It will record 2 hours of video.

CamStudio – Free Screen Recorder- Record Audio and Video directly to Flash. A Great alternative to paid similar programs if your on a low budget.

Camtasia Studio- I bit the bullet and purchased this program to record  onscreen activity and then edit my videos. There’s a free trial to get you started (no affiliate program)

Jing- Techsmith, the same company that provides Camtasia Studio and Snagit has released a FREE Version that combines both of the tools into one. There are some limitations but this is a great alternative to the previous tools that I’ve mentioned. I love the little hovering icon on my desktop. It expands when I click on it.

Animoto- Create a free account and then upload your photos and text. Then add your own music or use the music provided on their website. It’s totally free to create a short 30 second video. Full length videos cost $3 per video or $30 a year for unlimited videos. Share your videos on Youtube, Myspace, Facebook and Twitter.

Powerbullet Presentation Software – Create slideshows, auto-running presentations, and more. You can output the finished presentation as Flash or executable. This smalll, simple to use software is free, no ads and no catch. Simply type, click, and drag.
