How To Move a Wordpress Blog

by Greg Nemer

When you install a wordpress blog you are given options as to “Where” you want to install it. I use the fantastico icon in my hostgator account to install my blogs.  There is an option for a directory location, such as http://example.com/wordpress.

On my missiosnwithpurpose website which I have had for years I decided to add a blog as an extra for my website. When I installed the blog it was installed as www.missionswithpurpose.com/blog.

If you look up my posts a lot of them will still be listed under that url.

Some of my subscribers told me that it was a little confusing having both a blog and a website with a lot of pages on it.

I decided to make my blog the main website.  Here’s how to make the change:

  1. Using an ftp client (I use Filezilla) bak up all the origianl files. There is a download option with filezilla
  2. Change both the wordpress url and the blog url to your desired location. (I simply took off the “/blog”in my case.
  3. Move al the files to your desired location. (since my files were under a folder called “blog”, I simply moved them under my main index.
  4. Delete the unused directory
